Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, raised in Long Beach California. DuVernay grew up with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was inspired by art. DuVernay worked as a night nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed during the days to be able to enjoy writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay was raised by parents who were knowledgeable about society and taught her how she could use art as a method of expression. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father recalled watching the famous civil rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma led her later on to create a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English as well as African American studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay became interested in producing in the broadcast media. She began her career working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the rubbish of one members of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalism and the jobs she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. In 1999, she launched her own private company for public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency has launched a wide range of promotion and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
